Cette résidence vise à poursuivre la recherche amorcée avec “Médium” - une installation vidéo déambulatoire – sous forme d’impression numérique.

L’installation initiale incitait à parcourir les territoires avoisinants d’un espace d’exposition, des objets-écrans-vidéos en main. Les séquences tournées au préalable présentaient une jeune femme filmée de dos dans un parcours muet, à travers des parcs, des bâtiments, des ruelles. Le spectateur pouvait, le temps d’une promenade, faire l’expérience d’une proximité avec l’image vidéo, l'objet tenant dans la main. Cependant, le sujet filmé ne se retournant jamais, il échappait indéfiniment à notre regard : metant en scène notre désir ou notre crainte d’effectuer un contact réel avec un étranger dans un espace public.

À présent, l’objectif consiste à reproduire la mise en scène du désir voyeur du spectateur, mais en ne faisant usage que de l’image numérique. Il s’agit de passer de l’expérience d’une œuvre à la fois mobile et temporelle à celle d’images fixes et bi-dimentionnelles. Le défi consiste à conserver l’implication physique du spectateur, telle une affirmation spacialisée du désir de contact, de proximité, de perception de l’autre.  C'est à partir d'images extraites de précédents tournages vidéo que des tests de résolution et de format d'image seront effectués dans les ateliers d’impression numérique de Daïmon. Il s’agira de déterminer différents ratios-étalons pour la production d'images qui imposeront au spectateur la distance physique nécessaire à leur lecture. Plus on s'approchera et plus le grain de l'image parasitera la lecture de l'ensemble,  plus on reculera et plus l'image deviendra à la fois nette et distante. Ce temps de production sera tel un exercice de lâcher prise sur tout dispositif technologique secondaire au propos : un temps de concentration permettant le développement d'un volet subséquent à l’installation “Médium”.

Clara Bonnes a obtenu une licence en esthétique et sciences de l’art à l’université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne en 2000, et une maîtrise en arts visuels et médiatiques à l’UQAM en 2005. Administratrice du centre d’artistes montréalais DARE-DARE, puis directrice générale par intérim de Champ Libre, elle s’intéresse aux différents contextes de diffusion artistique. En tant qu’artiste, elle explore le genre du portrait, plus récemment sous forme d'installations vidéo. Actuellement administratrice du Conseil québécois des arts médiatiques et assistante à la direction de la Galerie Samuel Lallouz, elle amorce une réflexion sur le développement du marché des arts médiatiques.

This residency will continue the investigation begun with “Médium”, an ambulatory video installation, in the form of digital prints.

The original installation saw viewers explore the areas bordering the exhibition space, object-screen-videos in hand. Pre-recorded video sequences showed a young woman, shot from behind, silently walking through parks, buildings and alleyways. For the duration of this walk viewers experienced a sense of proximity through the video image held in their hand. The subject never turned around, however, eluding our gaze and acting out our desire for, or fear of, real contact with a stranger in a public space.

The goal of the present project is to reproduce the mise en scène of the viewer’s voyeuristic desire using only digital images. The experience of a mobile and temporal work will give way to that of fixed, two-dimensional images. The challenge consists in preserving the physical involvement of the viewer, like a spatialised assertion of the desire for contact with, proximity to and perception of the other. Images taken from earlier video sequences will be used to carry out image resolution and format tests in Daïmon’s digital printing studio in order to determine various ratios and scales which can be used to produce images which will impose on the viewer the physical distance necessary to viewing them. The closer one gets to the image and the more the grain of the image interferes with a reading of the whole, the further one will back away from them and the sharper and at the same time more distant the image will become.

The time spent in production will be like an exercise in letting go of all technological means secondary to the goal of the project: to create a space for concentration which will make possible a subsequent stage to the installation “Médium”.

Clara Bonnes obtained a bachelor’s degree in the aesthetics and science of art at Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne in 2000 and a master’s degree in visual and media arts at UQAM in 2005. She has served as a board member at the Montreal artist-run centre DARE-DARE and as acting director of Champ Libre and is interested in the various contexts in which art is disseminated and viewed. In her work she has explored the portrait genre, most recently in the form of video installations. She is presently a member of the board of directors of the Conseil québécois des arts médiatiques and management assistant at the Samuel Lallouz gallery. Her current interests concern the development of the media art market.
